HISTORICAL COMMISSION TO SCREEN “HAYS COUNTY IN WORLD WAR II” IN DRIPPING SPRINGS

August 23, 2012
UPDATE (8/24): There will be two (2) showings in Dripping Springs. The first showing will be at 6PM and the second will be at 7:30PM on Monday, August 27th. The location will still be at the Precinct 4 Building on Roger Hanks Parkway.
****
Dripping Springs residents Travis Garnett and Bradley Davis are among the World War II veterans featured in the documentary film “Hays County in World War II,” which will be shown free of charge at 7:30pm Monday, August 27, at the office of Precinct 4 Commissioner Ray Whisenant, 195 Roger Hanks Parkway (just south of Hwy 290 about 1.5 miles west of RR12).
Presented by the Hays County Historical Commission (HCHC), the film is based on recorded interviews with Hays County veterans who served in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines during World War II. Their reminiscences about leaving the rural life of central Texas to travel thousands of miles to Europe and the South Pacific are mixed with original period photos and documentary footage of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the battle of Iwo Jima, the landing at Normandy, and much more.
Also included in the film is the story of the San Marcos Army Air Base that brought more than 10,000 servicemen to our county to learn navigation in the central Texas skies.
Along with Garnett and Davis, the veterans interviewed are Augustin Lucio, Bill Butts and Willie Higgs of San Marcos; Bill Johnson of Wimberley; and J.B. Wilson of Driftwood. Wren Giesen, who was a civilian employee at the San Marcos Army Air Base, also shares her memories.
The film was directed by Richard Kidd of Driftwood and produced by the Hays County Historical Commission, under the leadership of chairwoman Kate Johnson.
Refreshments will be served at the showing. For more information, visit the HCHC website at hayshistoricalcommission.com.

Subject: DEPARTMENT CONVENTION

District Commanders,

Time is running out.   Please pass on to your Posts, they only have until June 1st to reserve rooms for  the Convention.   We have not sold out the Hotel so we will have to release the block early to try and reduce the room block penalty.

Deadline for ads is June 8th.   As of today, ads have been very slow coming in.   The proceeds form the ads minus printing costs (as of today we have not received enough ad money to pay for printing the program) help defray the costs for the Commander's and President's reception.   We would appreciate everyone's assistance in getting ads for the program.  For complete information on the Department Convention including ad forms, go to http://txlegion.org/conventions/department-convention/

Wimberley VFW Rodeo July 5-7

Please put July 5-7 on your calendars.  We need volunteers to help with the Annual Rodeo at Wimberley VFW.  They need some of our guys to help out with parking, tickets, etc.  When you come to the meeting this Thursday evening, please let us know if you would be willing to help out for one to three days.  The rodeo is on the evenings of Thur., Fri., and Sat.  Thank you very much for any help we can get.  Any American Legion or VFW guys can help.

Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument Website Announcement

***************************************************************************************
The Texas Capitol Vietnam Veteran Monument website at www.buildthemonument.org has been extensively redesigned and is now live. It accomplishes the goal of the redesign to bring the focus of the monument on the Texas Vietnam veteran. The central theme of the site is "Honoring Our Texas Heroes" with particular emphasis on REMEMBER - HONOR - LEARN.

The dynamic and interactive website provides extensive information about the monument and includes photos, videos, and stories of Texas Vietnam veterans around the state. It affords the viewer of the site the opportunity to upload their story, photo, and/or video for display encouraging and broadening the truth about our Vietnam story. A viewer can sign-up to receive a monthly eNewsletter. Additionally, those that visit the site are encouraged to make a donation to help in the effort to get the monument in place on the Capitol grounds in Austin.

I think you will agree that this is bringing home the story of the honor, courage, and devotion to duty of the Texas Vietnam veteran.

Visit the site today www.buildthemonument.org.
