American Legion Texas Boys State
“Legion Day”

The American Legion Boys State Program is celebrating its 78th anniversary this year.  As part of the Program’s activities on the University Campus, this invitation is being sent to the members of our Legion Family who would like to attend all or part of the special activities we have planned to celebrate both our history and our place in the American Legion Americanism Program.

This year, as in prior years, the Boys State Program will sponsor Legion night on Thursday evening, June 14, 2018, during the week.  Activities for members of the Legion Family include the following:

An orientation to the program (OPTIONAL, for those who arrive early.  It will begin at 3:00 pm in Kinsolving Dormitory which is the site of our Texas Boys State HQ)
Dinner at one of the restaurants adjacent to the dormitory (a list of restaurants will be provided for you at HQ).  Note: This is a cost that will be for you to cover. You may expect to pay from $7-$15 per person.
Participation in the evening event which begins at 7:15 and includes welcoming remarks from the Department Commander, the Auxiliary President, and the Detachment Commander. The event will also include a very special presentation by a guest speaker, the esteemed General James Peake. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Peake)

We realize that time and physical constraints may preclude some from participating in both the orientation and the evening’s program, but please feel free to join in and/or leave the Program at whatever point fits your schedule.  Note that there is NO free parking anywhere near the UT campus.  We suggest you park in the 27th Street Garage, located at 27th Street and University Avenue.  (https://parking.utexas.edu/parking/garages/27th-street-garage-tsg).  Parking for the afternoon and evening may run as much as $20 per automobile.

Did you know?

OCW grant - A $50,000 grant from The American Legion’s Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW) program is helping to supply new baby welcome kits to women veterans at 58 VA medical centers across the country. The baby kits are part of the Department of Veterans Affairs first-ever nationwide baby shower events. More than 2,400 new veteran parents and parents-to-be who receive their care through the VA registered for a baby welcome kit, which includes a diaper bag, toiletries, hair brush and comb set, layette, blanket and hat. Priced at $50 apiece, the VA was nationally short 1,000 of the baby wellness bags and the Legion’s OCW grant is fulfilling that need. www.legion.org/ocw
Newsletters - The American Legion has several monthly e-newsletters that highlight news and events surrounding Legion programs. For example, with the Legacy Run approaching in August, sign up for the Legion Riders e-newsletter for a listing of American Legion Rider events across the nation, a Riders Safety Corner and links to both start your own chapter and share what your chapter is doing. Other e-newsletters include an Honor & Remembrance, Flag Alert, Commander’s Message, Centennial Celebration, Legislative and more. Sign up at www.legion.org/newsletters.

100th anniversary - An American Legion Centennial Media Kit is available for posts to download at  www.legion.org/centennial to help share in the celebration of the Legion’s 100th anniversary. The kit is located under Media and provides Centennial message points, event ideas, resources to help enhance the impact of the event in your community, and templates for press releases, radio public service announcements, and more. If your post is turning 100, share how you plan to celebrate by sending an email to dispatch@legion.org.
