Dear Department Leaders,

An American Legion national online mental health survey released last week is revealing some staggering information about veterans and their caregivers nationwide. Hundreds have responded so far, but many more are needed so The American Legion can better understand the mental health conditions of veterans, the effectiveness of treatment and resources available for them and their caregivers in various geographic regions.

A central objective of this research is to find effective ways to reduce and prevent veteran suicide.

I am calling on you to contact your district and county commanders, as well as service officers, to ask them to encourage veterans and caregivers in their areas to take the survey. All responses are confidential, and no personal information is collected.

Learn more about the survey by visiting The American Legion national website at this link: https://www.legion.org/veteranshealthcare/245653/legion-launches-online-mental-health-survey

Veterans and caregivers can also go directly to the survey online at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N8JC8SM

This information is critical in our effort to improve mental health treatment for veterans and their caregivers, reduce the suicide rate and shape our policy and resolutions on this important issue.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

For God and country,

Brett Reistadt

Fellow Legionnaires,

We wished to share a quick note on your American Legion Texas Boys State.

We are only a few weeks out from our 79th year of this amazing program. The excitement is powerful as we prepare to receive about 1,075 of your Delegates from across our dear Texas.  We are stoked!

  1. Thank you.  Thank you for all you do in support of Boys State.  This program is successful and highly respected because you do the true heavy-lifting at your Posts selecting the best talent to attend.  We appreciate you and thank you so much.
  2. Video.  If you have not seen, please view this short 4-minute video and share it far-and-wide.  You may see a few of your Delegates in there, and, gosh . . . learn by doing indeed!  It is such an awesome thing to watch the growth of your Statesmen over the week.  Link to video:  Texas Boys State 2018
  3. The Great Good.  Please share!  We always wish to hear about the accomplishments of your prior Statesmen as they embark on their adventures after high school.  We have heard from a number of Posts over time, as they learn of the many successes of their boys.  Bring it on!  Send to me at the address below.

Please permit me to express my hugest public thanks to the team that gives hundreds upon hundreds of hours each year to make this program tick.  These volunteers are the reason that your Texas program is one of the most revered across the Country.

We all remain honored to contribute to this remarkable program that -- like our other Legion programs -- is deeply meaningful, inspiring, actually makes a difference, inculcates servant leadership, and is transformative to youngsters.

Wishing you and yours the very best as we celebrate, honor, and remember our fallen brothers and sisters this Memorial Day.

Respectfully,

Case
