| Adopting new technologies to better serve veterans |

| Two years ago, the Texas Veterans Commission committed itself to modernizing many of our processes, and incorporating new technologies so that we can better serve our veterans and their families. Today we would like to announce two major milestones! TVC is excited to announce the awarding of two major technology contracts – VetraSpec and GovGrants – platforms that will greatly improve the agency's ability to serve the veterans of Texas. VetraSpec is a web-based service that will greatly benefit our Claims Representation and Counseling team, who already do incredible work, leading the nation in filing claims on behalf of veterans. Last fiscal year alone, TVC's staff of 129 claims counselors filed more than 130,000 veteran claims and helped appeal another 19,000 VA benefit decisions, which helped bring in $4.1 billion for Texas veterans. By replacing our current paper-based claims submission process with VetraSpec our claims team will now be able to submit claims faster – meaning a shorter wait time for veterans – and will have a more robust method of tracking claims statewide. This platform is anticipated to launch agency-wide next month. Additionally, our Fund for Veterans' Assistance will be transitioning to GovGrants to streamline administrative processes and make it easier for potential grantee organizations to navigate the grant cycle. This cloud-based platform creates an automated workflow with reminders, automated tracking, and consolidated reporting. The system should make our processes more efficient, enabling quicker reimbursements with less manual input errors, and much easier record keeping for audits. FVA is currently working to transition their records to this new platform, and plan to have it fully implemented for our next grant cycle in August 2018. For over 90 years we have been committed to serving Texas veterans, their families, and survivors, and are committed to always improving how we provide those services. We believe these new programs can make us even better. Al Cantu, Commission Chairman The Reverend Richard McLeon, Commission Vice Chair Jake Ellzey, Commission Secretary Daniel Moran, Commissioner Kevin Barber, Commissioner Thomas Palladino, Executive Director |

| | | It was 70 years ago that President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Women's Armed Services Integration Act which enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of the armed forces. The act had limits in place restricting the number of women in the military to two percent of the enlisted force and 10 percent of officers however this limit was repealed in 1967, and by 1973 the transition to the All-Volunteer Force there was a dramatic increase in the opportunities available for women to serve. Today in Texas, women make up 11 percent of the veteran population and are the fastest growing demographic. To meet the needs of women veterans we must recognize that they are VETERANS, educate the public about their service and sacrifice, and put forward initiatives that help them thrive in their communities. On June 12, 2018, Texas will officially acknowledge Women Veterans Day. There will be events throughout the state and all veterans are encouraged to participate in honoring the military heritage of the women veterans of Texas. To learn more, visit our website and click here to find veteran events near you. If you would like to add your Women Veterans Day event to the TVC events calendar, send flyers to anna.baker@tvc.texas.gov. | The Hilton Honors Military Program is going strong! In partnership with State Workforce Agencies, Hilton Honors is donating points to eligible transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses. By becoming an Honors Military member, you will receive a 100,000 point donation to help make travel more financially feasible during job-search related activities. To find out if you're eligible, please contact one of TVC's Veteran Employment Representatives at your local Texas Workforce for more information. |
To all women veterans, we welcome you to join the Texas Women Veterans Professional Network where we will strive to educate and inform women veterans of various benefits and services available to them earned through their military service. The network is closed to provide a safe environment for women veterans to empower, mentor, and connect with each other.
