Veterans in the Classroom Nov 9, 2011

Attention all VFW/American Legion Veterans:

This year we will continue our very successful "Veterans in the Classroom" program at the DS Middle School.  We have done this for several years and it is one of our best and most enjoyable programs.

Please put this date on your calendars:  Wednesday, November 9, 2011

The time will be from about 8:30-4:00.  (Classes start at 9:00 AM)

Location:  Dripping Springs Middle School (old HS)

We will be in three classrooms with sixth grade students and will talk to the students about our careers and our military experiences.  We will then answer questions for a short period.  There will be 4-5 veterans in each class and we will try to achieve a mix of the five military branches and we will try for a mix of war era's.  This is for any veteran and not just combat veterans.

Coffee and snacks will be served in the morning and the school will provide lunch for all of us.  If you can come all day or for half a day, that is OK.  We need to arrive at the school's main office at about 8:15 AM to check in and to get nametags.  Casual dress with VFW/American Legion caps.  VFW/American Legion Shirts or Polo military shirts with branch is fine.  Bring pictures of your airplanes or ships, etc. to show students.

Please call or e-mail me as soon as possible to let me know if you will attend this event.  We will need to get three classroom teams set up and planned.

Gary:  858-5637. gphale@verizon.net

Thank you for your help with this program.  Gary

National Drug Take Back Week, Oct. 24-28

National Drug Take Back Week

National Drug Take Back Week is October 24-28, 2011. During that week, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the VA Police will offer a collection site outside the Spinal Cord Injury Entrance of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This is an opportunity to dispose of any unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs, free with no questions asked. The goal is to prevent these medications from falling into the hands of juveniles or criminals, or being flushed down toilets which harms our drinking water supply. For more information, contact the VA Police at 713-794-7106.

Community Event: Wallace Mountain Cemetery Tour

Information provided by the Heritage Circle of Dripping Springs:

If Tombstones Could Talk: A Walking Tour of Wallace Mountain Cemetery
October 23, 2011

Come with me to the top Wallace Mountain.
Come look into the misty hallowed haunts of yesterday
Stand quiet to hear the silent sounds that shaped our history
The question is "If these stones could talk," what would they say?

History buffs and wannabes alike are invited to join Heritage Circle of Dripping Springs on its first-ever walking tour of Wallace Mountain Cemetery on Sunday, October 23, 3-5 p.m. come-and-go. VFW Post 2933# and American Legion Post #290 will direct parking for the event. A horse drawn hay wagon and bus will take visitors to almost the top of Wallace Mountain. Some walking is required, so wear comfortable shoes!

If Tombstones Could Talk is produced in partnership with the Dripping Springs High School Thespian Club under leadership of director Rachael Koske. It will feature voices from the graves of Dripping Springs' earliest residents as recreated by local drama students and others. Well-known local fiddler Alex Dormont will set the tone for the event with his haunting period dirges and Civil War melodies, as well as songs he researched and played for the epic television series, "Lonesome Dove."

Refreshments will be provided at the self-paced tour which costs $5 for adults and school age children. Admission is free to Heritage Circle members (Pathfinders and up) and their spouses. Copies of Wallace Mountain Cemetery: If Tombstones Could Talk, the booklet, published by Heritage Circle, may be purchased on site or ordered for $12. Booklets contain updated research on the cemetery and burials, a must for genealogical and/or historical research.

Wallace Mountain Cemetery is located .6 mile east of Ranch Road 12 at Highway 290 East, just past HEB. A sheriff's deputy's flashing car light will mark the spot that afternoon. Sunday, October 30, 3-5 p.m. has been scheduled as a rain date.

Please direct questions to heritagecircle@verizon.net.

Bastrop TX AL Post 533 and assistance

See below email from Walter Ivie and below for the email from Brad Pack, 10th District SAL (Sons of the American Legion) commander. Post 76 is also a collection point.
                        Al Banzer
                        10th District Hubmaster

Post 533 has a facebook page ( Click Here ) that is providing information on their needs.  Brad Pack called last night and saked if I could contact someone about getting 25 cots.  I made several calls to Camp Mabry after hours and finally wound up talking to the Red Cross.  I left my number, but did not receive a call back.  Later Brad informed me that someone at Post 83 called a friend at the National Guard and 500 cots were going to be delivered to the Red Cross early this morning.

The current needs are for clothing.  Post 83 is a collection point.  They will take them to Bastrop around 6:00PM tonight.  I cleaned out my closet and was surprised to have many pants and shirts to donate.  I would suggest you go through you closet and see what you have.  You can drop them off at Post 76 or Post 83.  I'll call Dallas to let him know, but if he is not there, then you can leave them on the benches in front.  Anything left over can go to Goodwill.

Below is from the 10th District SAL Commander, Brad Pack.

If anyone wants to know what's going on at Bastrop American Legion, go to Facebook;  American Legion Post 533. They are posting updates about every two hours.

At least 4 members of the post and one SAL member have lost everything in the Bastrop fire.  Many more have been evacuated, not knowing their fate. Yet they are at the post serving hot meals to the firefighters and police. They have several needs X, XL, XXL shirts. Men's pants 36/30, 38/36, 32/34, 34/36. Bedding, cots as they have kids sleeping on the floor.

We (the SAL) are taking things to them from Austin Post #83, and Round Rock Post #447. If you can get donations to either post, we will get them delivered. They will be needing cash donations in future.  If anyone would like to help that way, when I get the info on how to make cash donations I will send it.

Some people we all know have been affected by this fire.  Lisa and Sherry who work for Auxiliary at headquarters live in Bastrop. Lisa is ok. Sherry was evacuated but has returned home until further notice.  Jackie Brown's son has lost everything; his family left with the clothes on their back. This is the time we need to think about helping others; especially our veterans and their families.  Thank you for any help you can give.

Prospective Auxiliary Members

Dear Legionnaire:

Time and time again it has been demonstrated that the most successful Posts are the ones who work cooperatively with their Auxiliary Units.  With this in mind, our Post has approved the formation of an Auxiliary Unit, as we realize the positive effects a Unit can have on a Post.  We hope to build a family organization of Legion and Auxiliary members volunteering together too enable us to do more for our veterans, our youth, and the community.

Do you have female family, relatives, friends, even co-workers who enjoy volunteering?  Would they ;enjoy helping the Auxiliary in the betterment of our veterans, youth, and our community?  Are these women eligible for membership in the American Legion Auxiliary?  If so, will you please share this information in this letter with them – maybe make a copy and take it to work to be posted.

Young girls and women eligible for membership are the wife, daughter,, mother, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, sister, and grandmother, including same step relatives of a Legionnaire or a deceased veteran having served during the eligibility dates.  Women who of their own right are eligible for membership in The American Legion, are also eligible to join The American Legion Auxiliary (they become dual members).

There will be an informational meeting of interested women on March 31 at the Vince Taylor Post 290 at 7 PM.  A Department Auxiliary representative will be present at this meeting to provide information on the various programs and activities, dues, meeting dated, officers, etc.

Having a strong Unit to work closely with our Post will strengthen our commitment to this community.

Please call Donnea Simon, Post member, for more information:

URGENT: VETERANS NEEDED AT THE FINANCE COMMITTEE HEARING MONDAY 21 MARCH 2011

Please make every effort to attend the Finance Committee hearing on

Monday
21 March 2011
10:00 am
E1.036

As you are well aware, the transferability of the 100% property tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans to their surviving spouses is the number one legislative priority of the Texas Coalition of Veterans Organizations for the 82nd Texas Legislature.

Coming with very short notice are bills that address our #1 priority.  I ask every veterans service organization to provide representation at this meeting.

Please send at least one representative from your veterans service organization.  More would be appreciated and will most definitely make a major impact on the members of the Senate Finance Committee.

TCVO and our friends and supporters in the Senate need your support and physical presence now more than ever.  In this time of budget shortfalls we, TCVO, must present a united front for the surviving spouses of our 100% disabled veterans.

If you and your veteran service organization believe that transferring the 100% property tax exemption to the surviving spouse of a 100% disabled veteran is important, and the absolutely right thing to do, please ensure that at least one member of your organization attends this meeting and turns in a card, or better yet, gives testimony in support of the legislation that will ensure that the widows/widowers will be able to keep their homes.

Time to act people.  No excuses.

RSVP directly to me and confirm that your VSO will be at the meeting to support this critical piece of legislation.

Thank you for your support.

Subject: Senate Finance Hearing
Date:3 March 2011

Your presence is needed on Monday 7 March 11 at 10:00 am at the State
Capitol Extension Senate Finance Committee room E1.036.
The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) is facing a 20% reduction in its
budget for the next two years.  This will result in the forced
reduction of full time employees, in particular a projected 22 Service
Officers.  These same Service Officers are the same dedicated
individuals who work with all generations of Texas Veterans to obtain
the benefits that they have earned from the Veterans Administration.
The loss of these Service Reps will result in Texas Veterans facing
significant delays in receiving their VA benefits.
The Senate Finance Committee will have a Public Hearing on 7 March 11
and will address the 20% reduction in funding to the Texas Veterans
Commission as recommended by the House Finance Committee.  TCVO is
working to prevent this proposed budget reduction, and will be
corresponding with and calling all the members of the House Finance
Committee in the next few days to educate them on the major negative
impact this will have on our disabled and disadvantaged brother and
sister veterans.
TVC needs the visible support of the Texas Veteran community at the
Senate Finance Committee hearing.  Please plan on attending this
critical meeting.  Now more than ever TCVO must present a united front
and exhibit our support for the full unreduced funding of TVC.
If you are not able to attend, please have one or more members of your
veteran service organization represent you at this hearing.  For those
willing to make this personal commitment to TVC and to the veterans of
Texas served by TVC, wear your organizations "colors" to distinguish
us as Texas Veterans and to guarantee that we are at this meeting as
visible support for TVC.

Post 911 invites you to an evening with Jim Hornfischer - 7 P.M. Tues. Feb 15th

Dear Friends,

Our American Legion Hunter-Morris Memorial Post 911 meeting in Feb. will be an excellent one with noted author and historian Jim Hornfischer. His new book, Neptune's Inferno, is coming out later this month. It is the compelling story of the U.S. Navy at the WWII Battle of Guadacanal. He has written two previous best sellers and is a good speaker. We will be meeting at 7 P.M. in the Cedar Park Recreation Center (1435 Main Street, Cedar Park, TX 78613) on Tuesday, February 15th. Please see the attached flier for details and invite as many people as you wish. Feel free to also post the flier where people may see it. Hope to see you there. Thanks.

Semper Fidelis,
James Crabtree
Commander - American Legion Hunter-Morris Memorial Post 911

Texas MIA/KIA's returning home after 41 years

Ladies and Gentlemen -
I believe this is the kind of services that we were formed for.  I
would consider it a honor if ya'll would join with me in honoring
these two Viet Nam veterans who paid the ultimate price for the
defense of our country.
Matt, please see if we can get the Riders for the surrounding
Districts in mass to join in this tribute.  Bernard, what about a
reception at Duncanville or the Post off Kiest Blvd (Dallas, TX) after
the services.
Also, this is a great opportunity to partner with the Patriot Guard to
assist the families in laying these gentlemen to rest.
As quick as we can get a count, let me know so I can pass the
information to Mike.

Thanking you in advance.

Subject: Texas MIA/KIA's returning home after 41 years

The North Texas Patriot Guard Riders have been asked to assist in the
Funeral of two Air Force F-4 pilots whose remains are being returned
home to Texas from Vietnam. I am extending an invitation to the local
American Legion Posts and the VFW Posts for any members who would like
to stand honors for this full Military Honors Funeral Service at
Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. The service is scheduled for
January 14, 2011, to begin at 1100 hours in the Texas Star area
located in the center of the National Cemetery.  The families agreed
that due to the fact these two friends have been buried together for
the past 41 years, that it only fitting they should be buried in the
same casket and a plot set aside beside the two for the surviving
spouse.

Below is more information concerning the aviators:

On the night of 12 November 1969, then Captain Robert L. Tucci, pilot
and then Major James E. Dennany, Weapons Systems Officer, launched
from Udorn Royal Thai AFB in their F-4D for a strike mission along the
Ho Chi Minh Trail. While attacking a truck convoy under the
observation of a Forward Air Controller, their F-4 was hit by
antiaircraft fire, crashed, and exploded.
There was no evidence that the crew escaped the aircraft before ground
impact and the crash itself was not survivable. In the absence of
proof of death both men were classed as "Missing in Action".
Both were promoted while in that status.

An annual Air Force review board concluded that all evidence indicated
the two had died in the crash, and the Secretary of the Air Force
accepted their conclusion with respect to Major Tucci; his status was
changed to "Killed in Action" 12 November 1969, Body not Recovered.
Colonel Dennany was continued in MIA status until 21 June 1978, when
the Secretary approved a Presumptive Finding of Death, changing
Colonel Dennany's status to "Died while Missing", Body not Recovered.

Major Tucci was on his second tour of duty in Southeast Asia; he had
flown 181 missions out of Da Nang Air Base on his first tour.

For the past 41 years, these two aviators from the Vietnam War had
failed to return home. They have now been found and are now being
returned home to Texas and their families. The Patriot Guard Riders
have been asked by the family members to contribute to the welcoming
home of these true American heroes..  We will assist in escorting
these two brave War heroes home to Mesquite and then to the
Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.  The PGR will assist in providing
full military honors by standing tall and silent in a flag line at the
National Cemetery before and during the final tribute to these brave
men.  We will be working directly with the DFW National Cemetery Joint
Service Honor Guard.

January 13th : we will provide a small group of riders who can ride in
a tight formation, in the dark, in the Dallas morning traffic.  All
escort riders will be required to attend a rider Safety brief prior to
the escort departing the Airport (reflective vest are highly
recommended). If you unable to ride in a tight formation or have never
ridden in formation for an extended period of time in traffic, this
would not be the time to learn.
We will need riders to assist in setting up and standing the arrival
flag line at the Funeral Home in Mesquite. We will stand honors as
these two men are taken from the coach to the Funeral Home.

January 14th: We will need riders who can ride in a tight formation to
be a part of the escort from the Funeral Home in Mesquite to DFW
National Cemetery. If you have never ridden in a tight formation, this
will not be the time to learn.
We will need riders to assist in setting up over 120 flags at the
National Cemetery prior to the arrival of the Funeral motorcade and to
stand silently in the Flag line during the Funeral.

This is a true privilege to have an opportunity to demonstrate the
respect we hold for these honored men, their families and their
community.
More information will be forthcoming and posted on the North Texas PGR
